The ABZ’s of Acne and BOTOX

You may be wondering…what the heck do acne, BOTOX and zinc have to do with each other. Well, I am about to let you in on the super power of zinc!

Zinc and Acne

Zinc helps the body inside and out and even helps maintain the health of your largest organ: your skin. Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, it is especially beneficial for inflammatory acne and related scarring. Zinc is an essential trace element for humans, and there is evidence that it is similar to antibiotics in improving the condition of inflamed acne.

It helps fight viruses and bacteria, and its anti-inflammatory properties help relieve some of the redness and irritation associated with moderate-to-severe acne. It even helps reduce the appearance scarring.

Zinc and BOTOX

“Some studies have found that patients who take zinc supplements prior to receiving BOTOX experience up to a 30% increase in the lasting effectiveness of their treatments,” says San Francisco plastic surgeon Edward Miranda, MD. “Upon being injected, BOTOX must bind to zinc to become effective; therefore, the more zinc available in the body, the more effective the Botox treatments will be.” source: New Beauty

How Much Do You Need?

We recommend 30 mg of Zinc Monomethionine per day. Excessive zinc may lead to deficiencies in other vitamins and minerals. One of the reasons that we like and sell  OptiZinc is that it contains copper. Copper is one of the minerals that can be depleted by taking zinc supplements. OptiZinc contains 30 mg of Zinc Monomethionine and 300 mcg of copper.

Although zinc is nutritionally and physiologically important, it’s also possible to get too much. For teens, the suggested maximum daily amount is 34 mg.

If you eat or otherwise ingest too much zinc, you may experience:
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea
  • headaches
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach upset
Too much zinc may even interfere with healthy (HDL) cholesterol levels.

Foods Containing Zinc

As with other nutrients, your body can absorb zinc more efficiently from the foods you eat than from a supplement.

The following foods are rich in zinc:

  • red meat
  • beans
  • nuts (avoid peanuts)
  • poultry
  • hemp seeds
  • whole grains
So there you have it! The ABZ’s of zinc. We recommend 30 mg for our clients who have inflamed acne. Always take it with food, as it can upset the stomach.

Zinc, alone, will not cure acne. However, when used in combination with the proper skincare and healthy nutritional and lifestyle choices, it helps expedite healing.

If you are ready for a customized skincare routine, schedule an initial consultation and treatment, so we can get you on the road to clear!
